Anna Karenina is a historical romantic drama film directed by Joe Wright. Adapted by Tom Stoppard from Leo Tolstoy ‘s novel of the same name , the film depicts the tragedy of Russian aristocrat and socialite Anna Karenina, wife of senior statesman Alexei Karenin, and her affair with the affluent cavalry officer Count Vronsky. Critics praised the cast, but commented on and criticised the heavily stylised adaptation, and were less enthusiastic with Wright’s preference for style over substance and his idea of setting most of the action on a theatre stage.

Stiva’s sister, Anna Karenina, a socialite living Saint Petersburg with her older husband Count Alexei Karenin, and son Seryozha, travels to Moscow to persuade Dolly to forgive her husband. Stiva meets old friend Konstantin Levin, a landowning aristocrat despised by Moscow’s elite for preferring the countryside to city life.

What difference is there between being repelled, being repulsed, being disgusted and being offended? Not much, perhaps, but consider the scene: Anna Karenina has taken a sip of coffee and raised her eyes to look at Vronsky, her lover, who is watching her. After hundreds of pages of love, lust, passion, fear, exhilaration, disappointment, exhaustion, aggression and, probably most important, jealousy, they are having their final fight.

Leo Tolstoy is describing Anna ascribing an emotion to a man whose love she needs so desperately that she is convinced he has stopped loving her. Consider also this: When she lifted her coffee cup, she extended her pinkie away from it — a precious gesture that signals just how far this domesticated, miserable Anna has come from the glamorous young woman she was at the beginning of the novel; she made a sound with her lips — and she realized this when she lifted her gaze and saw Vronsky looking at her.

Leo Tolstoy’s classic novel Anna Karenina has been filmed, televised and musicalized enough that a version had to shake things up. In Imperial Russia, Anna and her bookish, boring husband Jude Law are not so much coming apart as losing their sheen. What Anna fails to think about as she falls under his spell and into his bed is that she’s ultimately dancing with disgrace.

But it often works very well. For example, in one scene, Knightley is posed on a catwalk high above the proscenium arch and almost entangled in the ropes that bring scrims and backdrops up and down.

One of his most successful later works was The Death of Ivan Ilyich. He was the youngest of four boys. When Tolstoy’s mother died in , his father’s cousin took over caring for the children. When their father, Count Nikolay Tolstoy, died just seven years later, their aunt was appointed their legal guardian.

When the aunt passed away, Tolstoy and his siblings moved in with a second aunt, in Kazan, Russia. Although Tolstoy experienced a lot of loss at an early age, he would later idealize his childhood memories in his writing. Tolstoy received his primary education at home, at the hands of French and German tutors. In , he enrolled in an Oriental languages program at the University of Kazan. There, Tolstoy failed to excel as a student.

His low grades forced him to transfer to an easier law program. Prone to partying in excess, Tolstoy ultimately left the University of Kazan in , without a degree. He returned to his parents’ estate, where he made a go at becoming a farmer.
